London ADR has partnered with the Young Mediators Initiative (YMI) to offer support to young mediators and mediation advocates in the UK and Nigeria. Young mediators being newly trained mediators and mediation advocates who have little or no mediation or advocacy experience.
As a result of this partnership, London ADR Nigeria becomes the first and only ADR organisation based in Africa to work with the YMI in providing this level of support, on an international platform to young mediators in Nigeria/Africa. We are particularly delighted, as this will offer newly trained mediators in Nigeria and across Africa, the unique opportunity to become members of an international network of highly experienced mediators, who will act as mentors and give them the encouragement they need to pursue a career in mediation.
The YMI was established in 2010 under the umbrella of the International Mediation Institute (IMI), based in The Hague and the main objective is to support young mediators and mediation advocates with finding opportunities to gain experience in the field of mediation. It is intended as a platform where young mediators and mediation advocates can contact each other, share knowledge, get in touch with organisations and network with competent mediators and mediation advocates to gain experience through shadowing, assistantships, internships, co-mediations and mentoring programmes. One of such mentoring programmes is under development in Nigeria.
YMI membership is particularly helpful for young mediators who intend to develop their mediation career/experience, even up to the stage of IMI Certification and London ADR is committed to providing whatever support we can, as part of our mission to promote the mediation profession. As we have started to see promising mediation activities in Nigeria and other parts of Africa, we hope that newly trained mediators and mediation advocates would take advantage of this initiative.
Experienced mediators of London ADR and London ADR Nigeria will serve as mentors, while our newly trained mediators would be offered membership regardless of their sector, or whether or not they wish to practise as professional mediators. Young mediators in the UK who wish to join the YMI may contact London ADR or contact the YMI directly. Young mediators in Nigeria and across Africa who wish to join the YMI may contact London ADR Nigeria. They will receive adequate support by our experienced mediators in Nigeria and through the YMI membership.
